THANKYOU:

an exploration in the medium of escape

At every stage of technological advancement there have been naysayers who warn of the negative consequences inherent in increases of efficiency and mediation. Thankyou is a book about mediation that explores seven media environments in chronological order.

The seven sections are as follows:

spoken word

written word

radio & telephone

still photograph

film & television

internet

i, self

The texts in each section, with the exception of internet section, come from academic writings and are formatted in a way that reflects or emphasizes that type of mediation. The images within each section are all from books and are reproduced at their original scale.

Spoken Word

The text in this section has been lasercut to metaphorically represent the brevity of spoken language. As a page is turned, words are temporarily painted in light.

Written Word

The format of this section references written words ability to permanently construct environments. The letters are stacked like mounds of earth.

Radio & Telephone

The ability to instantly project information across the globe exploded language in an unprecedented fashion.

A closed society is defined as a society where the only information available is that which defines behavior. Radio & telephone ripped open that society & filled the air with information, a large amount of it irrelevant to the challenges at hand.

Type from various sources is layered to metaphorically represent this explosion. The reader is given a great deal of information at once and is forced to uncomfortably sort through it for value and relevance.

Still Photograph

Everything can be photographed, and therefore compared. An elephant next to a single-celled organism, an ant to a kangaroo. Photography introduces a new way to capture and therefore codify visual language in our environment.

Text in this section is printed and then photoraphed, often with other relevant objects printed to scale.

Film & Television

The text for Film & Television was played on television, and then photographed.

To reflect content, with each new form of mediation, the layering (and therefore 'level' of mediation) supposedly become more apparent.

Internet

The internet and digital media being the latest 'media environments,' this section contains no academic texts but rather screenshots of different parts of the internet. Based on the academic texts previous to this section, the readers now draw their own conclusions about the current media environments.

Self

The 'self' section defines the human sensorium as a mediation tool, with the conclusion that all experiences are mediated. Several texts are combined to form a fluid conclusion, presented in traditional book form.

Imagery

Section-specific imagery was presented in a consistent form, spliced between academic text. The imagery was scanned out of books & magazines & then re-printed in the book to scale. If Thankyou were placed in one of the source books, the images would align.
